This 2-week summer intensive provides students the opportunity to work in small groups as they explore the fine art of classical collaboration. Groups vary in size from 2 to 8 and are arranged with attention to skill level and instrumentation. Each of our ensembles enjoys the benefits of specialized chamber coaching on a daily basis.
The chamber experience differs vastly from the orchestra or large wind ensemble. In these small groupings, each player must become part of a unified sound while maintaining the power of their individual musical “voice.” The absence of a conductor means that students must be vigilant — aware not only of their own timing but in sync with the group, coordinating bowing, breathing, dynamics and phrasing. Musical leadership and cueing are important aspects of development in this form.
The all-too-rare experience of working in a small group fosters a depth of communication and friendship among musicians. Students develop skills in this program — listening to each other, supporting each other, teamwork — that will inform and enhance every aspect of their musicianship and carry over in positive ways throughout their lives.
